laura’s jean jacket diy

i, laura, have had this crazy jean jacket idea for a few months now, but it wasn’t until may when i finally had time to get started! i slowly acquired patches from etsy, thrift stores, local stores (like patina and i like you) and random chinese websites hahah! i bought an oversized, rather basic jean jacket from forever 21 (similar here) and put it together 2 weeks ago! i love it because it’s much more personalized than one i could find at the store. i also look forward to filling it with more patches over time!

portrait photography

i, jane, have been loving my new camera and got a special opportunity to photograph lucy, annie, and kenzie today. i have gathered my favorite photography tips for photographing people and outfits.

one: get to know your model. know what makes them feel good in front of the camera. in kenzie’s case, we mastered the forced, but perfect, laugh.

IMG_9854.JPG

two: (editing tip) use black and white edits for the right photos. personally, photos with very dark objects, such as the wall to left, and very light objects, such as kenzie’s white shirt, make for the best black and white edits.

IMG_9857.JPG

three: experiment with different backgrounds. some colors show up best in front of simpler backgrounds (see below), rather than a busy green space or bright colored wall, so don’t be afraid to experiment.

IMG_9856.JPG

…. but sometimes, the bright wall can work so, so well.

IMG_9855.JPG

four: find the little details. every freckle, fly-away hair, and eyelash adds to the big picture… don’t miss them !

IMG_9851.JPG

five: find the best pose for your models. we are big fans of hands in pockets.

IMG_9858.JPG

six: use props ! nothing is more fun than a big red lollipop or fun colored drink against a colorful summer outfit.

IMG_9859.JPG

IMG_9852.JPG

seven: try that bold idea- like an all sky background…

thank you lucy, annie, and kenzie !!

an interview with sonelle couture

as part of an upcoming summer long project we are doing with showroom mpls, we got the chance to interview fashion designer and custom dress maker sonelle of sonelle couture. we had the best conversation about her fashion journey and style inspiration. enjoy !

vsco-photo-1.jpg

where did your background in fashion begin? i learned to sew when i was 12 or 13 and went on from there. i then studied fashion design at the university of minnesota and graduated in 2006.

what do you enjoy most about your profession? i love doing bridal expos, leather bridal gowns, and custom work and alterations.

how do you advertise your business? i’ve found that word of mouth is most successful for promoting my work.

where do you find inspiration? i’ll play off other designers, look through fashion magazines, or use nature, music videos, and old movies as inspiration.

what is fashion to you? fashion is a way of expressing yourself, expressing your personality, an art form, and it can change depending on your mood.

who are your style icons? carolina herrera, karl lagerfeld, ellie saab, and sometimes chanel when they are not overboard with the jewelry.

how would you describe your style? old hollywood influenced.

what is your go-to look? i love pencil skirts; i think they look good on everyone. i also love jeans, specifically pencil jeans, and a jacket for a more casual look.

do you prefer retail or custom work? i prefer custom work because i like the personal aspect and being a part of someone’s important event.

what bumps in the road have you faced in this industry? branding and marketing is especially hard for me, and making a living off of something you love doing can also be difficult.

how long does it take you to create a piece? typically 10-16 hours for a normal piece, but bridal gowns take me much longer.

what advice would you give to young, aspiring designers? learn the business side of the career too, and work really hard.

what was fashion design school like? you need to go into it knowing how to sew. they teach you about different fabrics, the structure of fabrics, how to recognize different fabrics, and how clothing is made. they teach you the difference between natural fibers and man made fibers and how to keep safety in mind when choosing fabric.

what was your favorite class? my favorite class was my “fashion illustration” class because i love to draw; the final project was a fashion show.

how has the industry developed since the time you were in school? the use of technology within this industry has really increased. for example, when cameras in phones became more common, it made my work a lot easier. i was able to send sketches via text and could do more long distance communication.

how do you stay up to date on the latest trends? i look through magazines, watch fashion shows, stay tuned during fashion week, and observe the way people around me dress. i notice different trends in different geological areas too.

what have you noticed about fashion in the minneapolis area? people here dress casual, are more conservative when it comes to formal wear, and like everyday clothes with a little spice.

where do you like to shop when you don’t design your own clothes? i like to shop at banana republic and opitz. i will walk through the racks and feel for unique fabrics and colors.

how long have you been in showroomtwo years, and i love it. everyone here is very supportive of each other.

we wear culture by google

the other day, i (laura) came across a very interesting segment on style, fashion, and culture by google! there are some really cool exclusive video’s from different museums all over the world, including the metropolitan museum of art, museo salvatore ferragamo, kyoto costume institute, and others that showcase different designers, style icons, traditional dressings, and conservation tactics. seriously, everyone needs to check this out! it is so cool. i feel like i can’t fully sum it up- there is just so much in this segment!!!

one of my favorite parts of the segment is the piece on all different fashion icons and designers that have changed the way we view style and fashion today. Screen Shot 2017-06-09 at 1.53.16 PM.png

another really cool part highlights the fashion forward movements/groups that have made a big difference in this world.

Screen Shot 2017-06-09 at 1.55.10 PM.png

there’s also a diverse section on the making of different cultural/traditional fashion pieces that is worth checking out.

i hope you find this as interesting as i did! thank you, google for such a cool read!!

we wanted to let you know that we plan on doing daily posts this summer, like last summer, and that we have so much fun coming! we have been busy coordinating with different companies and brainstorming fun ways to work with them.

i, laura, wanted to share some photos of lake harriet (in minneapolis) that i took the other night! for those of you that haven’t gone and that live in the area, i would definitely recommend that you come enjoy the lake soon! it’s a great place to run, walk, fish, swim, paddle board, enjoy concerts, and eat at too!

tokyo fashion

i, jane, just got back from tokyo, japan a few days ago! (more to come on my itinerary soon) when i went to tokyo, i had a single vision of what kind of fashion i would see. i imagined the eccentric, colorful “baby doll” style outfits that people tend to stereotype tokyo for having. however, i was instead exposed to wide spectrum of styles. something very prevalent was a french influence. french boutiques and french inspired fashion was everywhere. to further investigate, i spent a day in the western area of tokyo near the ebisu subway station to shop the french boutique filled neighborhoods.  here are a few pictures and pieces i brought home !

this yellow shirt was my favorite purchase of the trip.
IMG_7878.JPG
was also in love with this fun collar, but sadly it didn’t fit right. (and the whole store was one size fits all… which isn’t too uncommon for tokyo!)

and speaking of fashion, here’s what i wore for my week in asia.

IMG_7885.JPG

pink sweatshirt: h&m

black jeans: madewell

green shoes: karhu (and also the absolute best shoes for traveling. super comfortable and easy to match and work with a variety of outfits and colors)

IMG_7887.JPG

shirt: [laura’s] madewell top from last year

scarf: f21

IMG_7879.JPG

this backpack was a game changer. cute, comfy, affordable, fun, and can fit a lot of stuff… it’s got it all.

IMG_7876.JPG

another travel tip: reversible, packable down coat ! mine was from amazon (laundry brand). here it is in purple and a very similar one here.

IMG_7875.JPG

sweater: jcrew last season

scarf: above

maroon pants: paige brand here. (all their pants are super comfortable and don’t get worn or torn)

shoes: above

stay tuned !

Black jeans and a t-shirt. Or anything with stars because I’m really into them right now.

What is one article of clothing you couldn’t live without?

Hats.

What is your favorite piece of clothing that you own?

My yellow baseball hat.
